Game Recap

The Panthers JV put in an impressive display of passing soccer to ease past Shadow Ridge. Starting line up: Dagum, Trevor Wattles, Franco, Stodick, Claire, McGee, Posada, Wener, Parker, Hayes, Gray.

The Shadow Ridge attack was rather one-dimensional with them playing balls into space for their pacey striker. However, the excellent positioning, defensive cover, and speed of the Panthers defense denied the Shadow Ridge striker any opportunities. Five minutes in Nathan Dagum made an acrobatic save high to the left to deny a good shot from 20 yards but this was the extent of Shadow Ridge efforts on goal for the whole game. The Panthers gave a display of passing soccer that was amongst their best this season. They used the width intelligently, especially through Luke McGee on the left wing who constantly caused problems for the Shadow Ridge defense. The Shadow Ridge goalkeeper was the only thing that stopped the Panthers from racking up a basketball score as the constantly threatened the goal. He saved shots from Ricky Gray, Cole Wener, and Josh Parker before the breakthrough. On 20 minutes Sebastian Franco surged out of defense and found Gray making an excellent run between two defenders. Gray shot well but his effort was well saved by the goalkeeper. However, the keeper could not prevent the rebound and the ever alert Jacques Giutetto pounced to convert from close range. Five minutes later in an almost identical move Gray was put through by Wener but this time shot straight at the goalkeeper with Giutetto calling for a square ball for an easy tap in. Half time 1-0.

The Panthers continued to dominate and ran out comfortable winners. Starting line up: Dagum, Grunwald, Franco, Stodick, Claire, Ruffer, Mohamed, Schutze, Ryder, Hayes, Gray.

The Panthers continues with the same style of play despite the personnel changes. Particularly impressive was Saifir Mohamed who is growing into the defensive midfield role. He continually won challenges in the center of the field and always used the ball intelligently. The second goal came off Zeck Ruffer seizing on a lose ball in midfield and playing an intelligent through pass to Gray who ran into the penalty area and finished impressively past the advancing goalkeeper. The Panthers then proceeded to pepper the Shadow Ridge goal, with the goalkeeper making a string of impressive saves from Hayes and Gray. Franco delivered an excellent free kick into the penalty area and Connor Schutze’s excellent header went inches over the crossbar. Final score 2-0.

The Panthers JV unceremoniously dismantled an undefeated Shadow Ridge team in an impressive performance of team work. The win was far more comfortable that the scoreline indicates due largely to the Shadow Ridge goalkeeper and poor Panthers finishing.

Game Recap

The Panthers JV staged a comeback victory in a game that they dominated almost 100%. Five minutes in the Panthers were stunned by a 30 yard bullet that found the roof of the net. However, this was all that Western had and the Panthers dominated the first half but were unable to take any of the chances they created.

The Panthers came out strongly in the second half and took only 10 minutes to set the record straight. Alijah Posada showed that the Panthers also have a long-range threat when he volleyed impressively from 22 yards and left the goalkeeper with no chance. Five minutes later, Conner Schutze scored an excellent headed goal from a perfect Luke McGee corner. The Panthers continually knocked on the door but could not extend the lead. At the other end, Western was unable to get behind the excellent Panthers back line. This victory was far more comfortable than the scoreline suggests but was enough for the Panthers to hand Western their first defeat of the season. Final score 2-1

Game Recap

The Panthers strolled to victory away to Shadow Ridge on the resumption of conference play. Starting line up: Huckfeldt, Jarvis, Nogues, Lloyd, Olenak, Stephens, Ruffer, Stevenson, Robledo-Matadamas, Manthey, Gomez.

The Panthers were able to field their settled starting 11 and this made a big difference to defensive solidity. The Panthers dominated play throughout, restricting Shadow Ridge to one effort on goal for the whole game. Five minutes in, Henry Robeldo-Matadamas will wish he could have a second go at an effort he blazed over the crossbar from 6 yards off an Antonio Gomez cross, when it seemed easier to score than miss. The only action Shadow Ridge was getting the Panthers half was due to Panther misplaced passes or players holding the ball too long. One midfield turnover allowed Shadow Ridge to put a striker into the penalty area but pressure from Cole Lloyd and a comfortable save by Hudson Huckfeldt prevented a goal against the run of play. The Panthers’ breakthrough came on 23 minutes when Zack Ruffer converted from short range after Ryan Nogues, who had stayed in an advanced position after a surging run from defense, played an excellent ball across the goal. The Panthers continued to dominate and on 36 minutes Tim Stephens converted an excellent Robledo-Matadamas corner with a powerful header. Half time 2-0.

After a couple of minutes of Shadow Ridge pressure at the beginning of the second half, the Panthers dominated the remainder of the game and ran out comfortable winners. Starting line up: Huckfeldt, Jarvis, Nogues, Lloyd, Olenak, Stephens, Ruffer, Stevenson, Robledo-Matadamas, Manthey, Gomez.

It took only 10 minutes of the second half for the Panthers to extend their lead and make the game secure. Stephens was taking the opportunity to join the attack with surging runs through midfield. On one of these runs he combined with Presten Manthey who found Stephens with an intelligent flick pass over the defender who brought Stephens down as he was about to convert the chance. Manthey slotted the resultant penalty into the right corner. Shortly after Robledo-Matadamas was withdrawn for Mikey Venezia who too only five minutes to get on to the scoresheet. Adopting his position as the trash catcher beyond the back post, a Manthey corner from the right eluded everyone and came through to Venezia who faked to shoot and pulled the ball across the defender to shoot and score from a tight angle. Manthey was withdrawn for Dylan Rath, Teagan Jarvis for Braxton Tonks, Tyler Olenak for Atakan Saricayir as the Panthers sought to spread the load with back-to-back games on the calendar. Stephens almost made it 5-0 with an excellent shot from the edge of the area that was saved impressively by the goalkeeper, before being withdrawn for Arber Hoxhalli. The playing level and domination were maintained and the Panthers should have extended their lead further when an excellent through ball from Hoxhalli found Gomez in behind but he blazed his volley over the crossbar. Final score 4-0.

It was important for the Panthers to re-establish normal service after two defeats on the bounce. This was the first of three games this week and it was also important to maintain the points advantage at the top of the table and leave our opposition with little hope of prevent the Panthers from winning the division. We are five points clear with a game in hand with four games remaining and a win away to Centennial on 10/17 will put the Panthers in an almost unassailable position.

Game Recap

The Panthers lost a mid-season non-conference game to Western in disappointing fashion. Although the Panthers only had 75% of their starting defensive lineup available, they should have done better in a game where they had a 2-0 early lead. Starting line up: Huckfeldt, Tonks, Hoxhalli, Lloyd, Olenak, Ruffer, Stevenson, Venezia, Robledo-Matadamas, Manthey, Gomez.

The Panthers took an early 2-0 lead when Presten Manthey converted from close range after the goalkeeper had saved an effort from Antonio Gomez. Manthey then doubled the lead when he latched on to a long ball from Henry Robledo-Matadamas and slipped the ball past the advancing goalkeeper. The Panthers were looking comfortable but were guilty of relaxing too much and permitted Western to peg them back to 2-2 at half time. On both occasion they permitted too much time on the ball in the midfield and good through balls to strikers that showed intelligent movement unlocked the Panther defense.

In the second half the Panthers showed fatigue and ended up being beaten handily by a good Western team. Zack Ruffer pulled one back for the Panthers off a pass from Gomez and the Panthers spurned a number of other good field positions. Final score 5-3.

To score three goals and not win a home game is disappointing. However, all defensive cohesion was lost with the absence of key defenders. The Panthers will just have to put this one in the rear view mirror and get back to winning ways at Shadow Ridge.

Game Recap

The Panthers put in a below par performance to lose 3-1 against Cimarron-Memorial (CM). The Panthers did have a number of key absences due to injury for this game. Starting line up: Huckfeldt, Tonks, Nogues, Lloyd, Olenak, Stephens, Ruffer, Stevenson, Robledo-Matadamas, Manthey, Gomez.

The Panthers started brightly but spurned a number of good goal scoring opportunities early on. On a rare attack CM took the lead with a shot from a tight angle that was wholly preventable by the Panthers. This goal seemed to ignite CM who had looked low on confidence to this point, and the game became much harder for the Panthers. Presten Manthey equalized from the penalty spot after Ryan Nogues had been pushed at a corner and for a moment the Panthers looked like they may get things back on track. However, the referee had other ideas when awarding a very soft penalty to CM on a challenge in the box where the striker clearly flopped under minimal contact. The penalty was converted and the Panthers went in a half time 1-2.

The Panthers came out strong in the second half but always looked vulnerable to the counter-attack. Starting line up: Huckfeldt, Hoxhalli, Nogues, Lloyd, Olenak, Stephens, Ruffer, Stevenson, Robledo-Matadamas, Manthey, Montoya.

Toil as they may, the Panthers could not get the equalizing goal against a CM team that was content to sit back and hit on the counter-attack. With 15 minutes remaining, CM scored their third goal on a counter-attack but the Panthers were lucky that the final score against them was not more as they threw more and more men forward in an attempt to get back into the game. Final score: 1-3.

The Panthers’ problems were caused by not taking chances created, particularly early on. The conversion rate still needs to improve significantly if the team is to make the latter stages of the playoffs where competition will be stiffer.
