Palo Verde High School
Legacy High School
As with their Varsity counterparts, the JV struggled with the hard, bumpy field but staged a late come back to snatch a tie from a game they should have won comfortably. Starting line up: Dagum, Trevor Wattles, Franco, Stodick, Claire, Ruffer, Wener, Posada, McGee, Gray, Hayes.
The Panthers dominated play in the first half but lack of team play, poor ball control, and misplaced passes prevented them from creating any good chances. After 15 minutes, the Panthers were awarded a free kick centrally 20 yards out after a blatant trip. Ricky Gray hammered the ball into the bottom left corner leaving the goalkeeper no chance. This was no more than the Panthers deserved. Josh Parker was brought on down the left side and had an immediate impact. His runs were putting the right full back under pressure but he could not deliver the final ball to put a teammate in. Some good work down the right side by Zeck Ruffer saw him deliver the ball into the area. Lamar Hayes miscontrolled the ball under pressure but it ran through to Luke McGee who shot well only to see his effort excellently saved by the goalkeeper. Any action Legacy was getting was due to error in the Panthers defense and midfield and on of these events finally led to the equalizing goal. A giveaway in the midfield saw an early pass forward and the striker left Nathan Dagum with no chance with an excellent finish. Half time 1-1.
The second half was very much the same as the first but with the Panthers unable to find a goal. Starting line up: Dagum, Trevor Wattles, Franco, Grunwald, McGee, Conner Wattles, Schutze, Mohamed, Davis, Giutetto, Hayes.
The Panthers pressed relentlessly but could not create good positions inside the penalty area and on the rare event that they could they were thwarted by the goalkeeper. Legacy was resulting to long balls over the top, which the Panthers struggled to deal with at times. With 15 minutes remaining, one of these long balls led to a silly push on a Legacy striker that gifted a free kick opportunity. Legacy converted it well with a shot high into the net that Dagum didn’t seem to see until late. The rest of the half saw a Panthers onslaught. They won corner after corner but couldn’t convert. A rash foul on Gray on the edge of the area saw Hayes deliver a powerful free kick that the keeper saved impressively. With the clock winding down and a defeat looking imminent, the Panthers had yet another corner. The defensive clearance was seized on by Luke McGee and he shot impressively into the bottom left corner from 20 yards through a crowd of players. There was time for one more attack before the final whistle sounded but it came to nothing. In the end the Panthers showed the resolve to avoid defeat and had to be content with a tie.
It is a sign of how poorly the JV played as a team that both goals were unassisted. We will put this one down to the bumpy field but unless the JV returns to its team-based play, they will find it difficult against a good Cimarron-Memorial side next time out.
