Faith Lutheran High School
Palo Verde High School
The Panthers JV put in yet another creditable performance to comfortably defeat Faith Lutheran. Starting line up: Probst, Grunwald, Franco, Stodick, Claire, Wener, Parker, Posada, McGee, Lamar, Gray.
The Panthers were totally dominated throughout and the result never looked in doubt. However, an early line up error that put Cole Wener on the right wing and Josh Parker in midfield, instead of the other way around, made the team look unbalanced. Wener made a number of good runs down the right wing that came to nothing. Ricky Gray was trying to compensate for the imbalance and ended up trying to do too much. Lamar Hayes had a couple of good positions behind the right full back but his delivery into the box lacked quality and went straight to the goalkeeper on both occasions. As soon as Parker and Wener were switched a goal resulted after an excellent team move. Elijah Posada found Parker on the right wing at the half way line. Parker held off the defender and passed the ball inside to the supporting Wener. Wener drew two defenders and slipped the ball between them to Posada who was running intelligently into space. He controlled the ball with one touch and played an excellent through ball to Hayes, whose pace carried him beyond the defense for him to crash the ball into the net from inside the area. No more than the Panthers deserved for their total dominance. It was also an excellent example of the team play the players have been working on in training. Half time 1-0.
The Panthers continued their dominance even through numerous personnel changes and ran out to an easy victory. Starting line up: Probst, Trevor Wattles, Franco, Stodick, Claire, McGee, Mohamed, Schutze, Conner Wattles, Giutetto, Ruffer.
Normal service was quickly resumed as the Panthers continued their assault on the Faith goal. Just five minutes in, Connor Schutze found Luke McGee with an excellent ball behind the full back. McGee delivered an excellent left foot cross to the back post where the well positioned Conner Wattles scored with an impressive header. Hudson Ryder was brought on to the right wing and he made an excellent contribution and gave a text book example of how to play on the wing. He stayed wide, took his man on when in a one-on-one situation, but sought support when outnumbered. His excellent work, supported by full back Trevor Wattles, generated an number of excellent situations inside the penalty are that the Panthers did not capitalize on. A rare Faith attack was broken up by a combination of Gavin Claire and Sebastian Franco, and Franco played a quick ball forward where had spotted that an over-commitment by Faith had left a 2-on-2 at the back. Zech Ruffer beat the defender in the air to Franco’s pass and flicked the ball on behind the defense. This was anticipated by Gray who timed his run well. He was clean in and made no mistake past the helpless keeper. Full time 3-0.
As with the Varsity, the JV transitioned played worked on at the training field to the game situation to great effect. The unbeaten run goes on!
